This e-book is an illustrated list of freeware sceneries produced by freeware authors in 2024. Each scenery item has a link to download it.
What use does the Flying Low - 2024 X-Plane 12 Freeware Scenery e-book have?
An extraordinary number of freeware sceneries are produced by very talented X-Plane scenery artists who often spend hundreds of hours crafting an airport scenery. An absolute labour of love. And because they are free, but have required so many hours of the author’s “blood, sweat and tears”, they are priceless.
Unfortunately, after an initial flurry of publicity those beautiful creations seem to get forgotten. Sure, there is nothing to stop you searching for them, but first, you have to know they exist in order to download them. Then you need to figure out how much work and frustration will be involved before that scenery is operational in your own X-Plane 12 system.
And after all that effort, it might not really seem to be so different from the stock default sceneries supplied with the X-Plane 12 package, anyway.
This book does all the hard work for you. Each selected scenery comes with installation instructions, a few author-supplied screenshots and a comparison matrix which shows two screenshots of the stock default X-Plane scenery and next to it, two screenshots of the artist's freeware scenery taken from the identical camera positions .
This book supplements Flying-low: Scenery Book 2 - Version 1.3 which includes explanations about how scenery works and earlier sceneries (prior to 2024) for X-Plane 12.
How do sceneries qualify for inclusion?
I have curated each of the sceneries shown in this section using the following rules:
• The sceneries must have been created or updated in 2024. (See my Scenery Book 2 - Version 1.3 for earlier sceneries compatible with X-Plane 12)
• The sceneries must be Freeware, Donationware, Coffeeware or Beerware.
• The sceneries must work without errors.
• The sceneries may not be dependent on any plugins. That means - although the scenery might work happily with various plugins, to qualify for inclusion, it may not require a plugin.
• If a scenery has an overly complicated install procedure, it is rejected. (My subjective opinion)
• If a scenery requires a library which is difficult to install, it is rejected. (My subjective opinion)
The first part of the book provides a list of libraries, download links for them and how to install them. Unless you install every single scenery fearured in the e-book, you won’t need to install all the libraries - only those that the individual scenery packages need.
The second part of the e-book consists of images of the sceneries themselves including installation instructions, library requirements and a visual comparison between the artist's scenery and the default X-Plane scenery.
Updates - What happens if a qualifying scenery gets forgotten?
I am not perfect and I’m sure there are many sceneries that were produced in 2024 that I have missed. That’s what updates are for.
As with all my books, you only need to purchase this book once. All subsequent updates are free.
The PDF e-book is very large and has 837 pages (418 Double spreads).
