“GPS, ATC & FMS ” is the third in a series of Flying-Low Navigation e-books aimed at teaching the novice (and not so novice) X-Plane pilot about navigation in X-Plane.
This e-book focuses on GPS navigation. We look at how to navigate using the Garmin 530 and the Garmin G1000. The e-book is primarily practical, with internet links to the theory, videos and long-winded explanations if you need them.
Nowadays, most people fly using GPS navigation (a moving map display showing their actual position). However, setting up a flight plan can get quite complicated.
To use this book, you only need X-Plane 12 and a free Flight Planner/Moving map application. I recommend using Little Navmap for this purpose. There's no need for extra scenery or add-ons, although you can enhance your X-Plane experience if you wish. The instruction flights in this book use the default Laminar Cessna C172s and the Cessna C172s G1000, but any light aircraft with the G1000 will work just fine.
The e-book consists of three hands-on flights. The approach with this book is one of "follow along and get familiar" rather than dry aviation theory, which is freely available in quantity on the Internet.
The complexity level is pitched at the enthusiastic beginner - the complex stuff may be covered in a more advanced e-book in the future.
The first flight is as simple as it gets: Fly Direct from one airport to another to see how the GPS and Autopilot work together.
The second flight uses the G530 and provides the student pilot with an overview of how the Flight Planner, FMS, Autopilot and ATC all work together to form the basis of a short flight from takeoff to landing.
The third flight involves entering the flight plan into the G1000 FMS in some detail. Once again, a sightseeing flight brings together the Flight Planner, G1000 FMS, Autopilot and ATC.
This book continues where Book 2 - VOR and NDB left off. It is the third and last of the Simple Navigation series
The PDF book has 353 pages (176 Double spreads):
